(If I get some good comments about this, I’ll let you know something very special and interesting about this game. It holds a very special place in my heart, even above the huge upset I talked about. )
Okay, I want my expert friends to examine one more chess position.
White just moved:
34. b5
Who has the upper hand, and what should black and then white do?

Fun game -
White B5? do you mean B4? There is no piece on b5.
there is no upper hand, other than it is blacks move. + one forward pawn gives Black a potential endgame edge - however, a knight is better suited than a bishop in a battle of the rooks…in my humble opinion.
Black- R c4
White- NxP a5

I must mean b4, either that or the pawn is in the wrong place. The reason that bishops are worth “3.5″ compared to knights being worth 3 is that in the end game bishops are more powerful because they can move great distances across an open board. Sure you can fork pieces with a knight, but a good player won’t let that happen. Another thing against black is that the bishop is on the wrong color to protect the advanced pawn.
Did you read the ending to the game?

ok…well piece points are worth something in the end….but i’d rather have a knight
the bishop protecting pawn issue is WHY i dont like bishops - they can never leave their stripes…
I did read the end game…fantastic news for metcalf…but hardly the kind of finish i was looking for…i stared at this game for an hour, wondering what was so insane about it…
anyway - i figure white wins.
did you lose rating points for drawing a 1000?

Knights are just so unwieldy and haphazard. My pawn just happened to be on the wrong file.
Are you saying you don’t like my anti-climactic story telling style? We WON the CHAMPIONSHIP. That’s way more important than one little game. Gotta play for the team, man.
Besides, if you think white wins then my solution was the best one.
I most likely did lose rating points. But I don’t remember what happened during the rest of the tournament. I had a habit of being lazy against inferior opponents back then. Of course, I do now as well. Dad almost beat me a few weeks ago.

Inferior opponents? Dad? You should be ashamed. He should have no less title than mentor, teacher, guide, guru, professor, instructor…kibitzer…..skipper….
